The right to go naked

We were having this discussion at work. A police officer is being judged these days in Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain) because he threatened a man to arrest him if he didn't dress up. You see, the young man was on his bike, COMPLETELY NAKED. There's no law against this. He has his right to go naked on the streets. I just don't feel comfortable with this law. I was labelled as "backwards" and old fashioned. Isn't that nice? Anyway, it was a friendly discussion. But still... what do you think? I feel this young man had a lot of free time and instead of spending his days just parading naked to stand for his right to go naked (silly since he does have the right to do that) maybe he should be doing something useful.
Do clothes bother you so much? How would you like to go naked to the supermarket (in the summer, of course)???

I certainly wouldn't expose this wreck of a body that carries me around. Sounds to me like the guy wanted some attention. I do believe that nudity is what we make of it. It doesn't offend me. Clothes, however, are for protection and adornment. I'd think folk would want to protect the tender bits.

Whether one ought to be allowed to go naked should depend in part upon what one looks like naked. ;-)

I think that while wearing no clothes is the "natural" state of things, even societies where nudity is permitted/not outlawed are not prepared to accommodate many people availing themselves of that "right."

I dont feel like being a liberal on the matter. It's about decency and not offending another human being's eyes.

The right to nudity -v- the right to live in a hygienic environment minus cringing and wretching and continual discomfort.

Or maybe it just takes time to adjust.

I don't know now if i'm being liberal or not :O)

Ayla, I can't help thinking the amount of offense taken would be directly related to the attractiveness of the naked person.

Hi Nuri!

Why didn't you tell me you had a blog?

The police officer was wrong bcause he is assigned to enforce THE LAW as written and not make laws on his own.

What if all police officers decided to make laws on their own?

Could be disasterous...

I think the nude guy was offensive (who wants ass-matter spead all over) but not breaking the law.

If bad behavior was against the law, there would be more people in jail than out of jail...

Hey, Buff: We just had another of those rare areas of agreeent:

I said: "Whether one ought to be allowed to go naked should depend in part upon what one looks like naked."

You said: "... the amount of offense taken would be directly related to the attractiveness of the naked person."

By my count, that's two within a week.

The universe is shaking.

JS: We can't allow this to continue!

I'm not sure what I find more offensive: seeing a naked guy on a bike or seeing the same guy picking his nose (is that right?) right in front of me. I guess Scott is right, if we are to make anything offensive illegal... well, farting, picking nose, scratching balls... the list could be soooo long.
There's a practical side to this, too: if you're naked, were do you keep your money, or your keys? (nonono, don't give me ideas...)
btw, Buffalo, Ayla, Scott and James, is going naked illegal where you live? I'm interested

Going naked in public is outlawed most places in the U.S., although I understand that some places--like nudist camps that are on private property--you can, if you choose, and other places, like South Beach in Miami, the authorities look the other way for topless women, etc.
