Is this what religions are about?

:O)

From a post-modern perspective, I guess.

The sad thing is - it pretty much sums up religion.

Buffalo,

yeah I'd say it would from our perspectiv here in functioning western democracies where the rule of law applies. I like to see it as part of the historical narrative. Religion was a necessary social and mental construct- a way of ordering society (whether wise or not, it happened and it's our history and it gave good and it gave the not so good and it gave the terrible.)

For that reason, I wouldnt say it sums up religion. I would qualify it and say it sums up religion from a our point of view (and by 'our' I dont know who I mean but i guess people who feel religion is no longer necessary because of our socio-economic, political, historical contexts.)

I wouldn't say that there isn't a place in society for religion. Every faith system that I have studied contains "rules" which are designed to help humanity live together in peace. Obviously, from the state of the world, it doesn't work all that well and probably never has.

Both religion and Hank (in this video) require a belief in an all seeing, all knowing, entity that will reward you if you worship him or her and, if you don't, will torture you beyond your ability to comprehend.
