Birthday cake??
Alicia chose this cake for her birthday. It looked so good on paper, and we tried so very hard to copy the design... But instead of this nice house-cake we came up with this:
An abandoned hansel&Gretel version of the house. A rather decadent and shabby home... snif... witches can't bake.

Graham Crackers are so much easier to make houses with, although I don't suspect that they would make a good b-day cake!
Hansel and Gretel fought off the wicked witch and escaped?
It's the thought that counts! That's the way I look at things.
But it's a neat idea to have a gingerbread house for a birthday cake... my birthday is around Christmas... I should request one... hehehe! =D
Graham crackers?? Not very sweet...
Buffalo, according to the legend, they escaped but that must have been an amateur witch... he he he
Michele, try telling that to my daughter!! She complained that the walls kept falling down and it didn't look like the picture at all!!!
just a suggestion here from one who has made more than her share of gingerbread houses.....
First you really need a pattern so that the walls and roof pieces are exact .. and are load bearing (believe it or not)
Second it is best to use "royal icing" which hardens like cement (though much much tastier) to put the house together..
Third you put it together in stages.. front of house to one wall.. back of house to the other wall.. let icing harden.. then join the front and back .. then let harden.. then add roof...
for future reference :)

Thanks, Morningstar. I did have a pattern, but when the pieces were baked they changed...
I did use royal icing (sugar and egg whites) but it didn't quite work. Maybe the walls should have been thicker?
